Best Dining in Monterey

October 28, 2026

Monterey's dining scene is different from Carmel's, and that difference is worth understanding before you choose where to eat. Carmel leans intimate and courtyard-centered. Monterey leans waterfront, historic, and downtown — with Cannery Row as its most visible, and most tourist-heavy, corridor.

For a sense of Monterey's history on a plate, start with the historic adobes. Stokes Adobe, set in a historic adobe built in 1833, pairs old architecture with a modern, ingredient-driven menu. It is a good example of Monterey doing something current without losing its history. The Sardine Factory, opened in 1968, is the other end of the institution scale: a longtime Cannery Row-area landmark with a wine cellar and sunroom dining room, closely tied to Monterey's fishing and cannery past.

For a more polished waterfront experience, Coastal Kitchen along Cannery Row offers a set menu and ocean views, and is often a better bet than the most heavily touristed rooms on the Row itself. The practical rule for Cannery Row dining is the same as for any tourist corridor: check the menu, the room, and the reviews, and prefer a place locals actually return to over a place that simply has the best location.

Downtown Monterey offers a different, more everyday range: Montrio, long positioned between upscale dining and a comfortable neighborhood restaurant, and Rosine's, a longtime downtown favorite for generous portions, comfort food, and huge desserts. Neither is trying to be a destination in the Carmel sense, and that is the point — a strong restaurant community needs places where locals can simply go eat.

Menus, hours, and reservations change, especially in a small market, so check the restaurant's own website before you plan a special night around it. If you are comparing Monterey with Carmel for a move, notice which dining rhythm fits you: Monterey's waterfront and downtown variety, or Carmel's village intimacy.
